My Little Kitchen Niche

Ignoring all the insinuations about my Kitchen Indecision (don't try to deny it!)- I would like to announce that I am done moving furniture in and out (in and out.. in and out) of my kitchen.

The finished product is a tad more cramped than I originally envisioned - but it's extremely functional (apart from the fact that you can't actually eat in it.)

We are already wondering what we ever did without a large upholstered chair and a desk in our breakfast nook.

This first picture shows the infamous chair, along with the white cupboard I used as a china cabinet in my old house's foyer. I love using things in different places and different ways than "the norm". This cupboard could be used as a pantry, or in a bathroom, or for books. It's an inexpensive pine piece that was painted during my White Spray Paint Phase. I am currently in a Black Spray Paint Phase, as you will see in the coming weeks.

Pretty much nothing is safe from me when I am armed with Rustoleum.

I've even spray painted bunk beds while my children were in them - sleeping (it was just a touch up - and I covered the children with sheets first.)

But shhhh.... My husband would totally freak out if he knew about that. He's a typical "haul everything outside, cover anything within 100 feet, sand first (ridiculous, I know!), two-coat kind of man.

I like my results a tad quicker than that. I'm a Nike painter :)

Not to brag on myself, but I love the way the black side table just kind of blends into the black bead board. It makes the room look less crowded. The table is from the patio shop at Target. Outdoor furniture is perfect for inside. You wouldn't necessarily want to replace your love seat with lawn chairs, but glass top tables, wicker furniture, and even metal tables like the one pictured, all are inexpensive ways to decorate. Benches are perfect for all sorts of places. I have a white coffee table/bench under a window in my living room - piled high with books. You could also use one at the end of a bed to stack quilts on.

So..My kitchen niche is finally and completely finished. I won't have to give it one more thought for a long, long while.

Now, I can simply concentrate on USING the kitchen for its God intended purposes. Cooking food, building relationships, writing encouraging emails at my kitchen desk, planning nutritious meals, reading to my children while they make their school lunches. It feels good not to have to focus on decorating it.

Do you think it needs a rug? And I should definitely spray paint the ceiling fan black, don't you think?

I love it! It's so cozy. Rug, yes, but leave the fan white. It's like you said with the table, it blends in and doesn't seem to take up that much space. If you paint it, it will be the opposite.

So are you ever going to give away your decorative plate secret? Nice nook, I mean, niche. I can't wait to see the other corners!

So I'm thinking with that big chair the floral for the curtain is out?

When are you going to paint the black on the china cabinet thingy?

Your kids have been in school weeks and weeks and weeks...what have you been doing with yourself?

Fabulous Niche! I agree a rug would make it feel more cozy, but painting the fan black would make it stand out more.

Have I told you how much I like interesting ceilings? I think your kitchen ceiling is way cool!

I'm looking forward to seeing other corners of your house.

My vote is also for a rug. And I hadn't paid any attention to the ceiling fan so I think leaving it white is best. It draws less attention. I have enjoyed seeing th progress of your kitchen/niche. I loved it as a dining area and now it is just lovely and inviting. I'm sure it will be well used.

I can't wait to see more.

I think the fan would stand out more if it were black but also tie in the other items in the room that are black. So I would say paint it black!

I would have never thought to set up a little nook like that. It's very cozy! And a rug would be fabulous...

It's lovely. Having seen in person what it was like before I must say this is a wonderful use of your nook. Now please go read that Dr. Seuss book with the nook who cooks with a nook cook book but he can't read.

Ummm... don't paint the fan, yes on the rug. Hmmm... I'm thinking something red.
