Metanarratives and other stuff you won't understand

I'm not trying to sound cocky or anything with that very long and formidable word in my blog title. When you know stuff, you just know it, you know?

Sometimes it just oozes out of me and I get so impressed with myself I have to share some of it or I'll bust.

It doesn't really matter that I didn't even know what a metanarrative was 12 hours ago. The point is - I do now. And I totally like the sound of myself saying it. I plan on using it A LOT.

Today I attended a Worldview Seminar with my children. It was put on by a local mom and her 19yo son, 16yo daughter, and a 12ishyo daughter. It must be true that a prophet is not honored in his own town, because I almost didn't go to what turned out to be an incredible day of learning.

The reason I was hesitant is because I've done tuckered myself out by selling $700 worth of used curriculum/books during the last week.

Seven Hundred Buckaroos....And don't ask me (like my husband, the party-pooper did) how much those books originally cost. The point I'm trying to make here is that a week ago those books were sitting on my bookshelves - and my wallet was empty. Today my wallet is full(er) and my bookshelves are ....still pretty full.

I sold the books as my contribution to helping the family pay for the uniforms my kids need for the classical school they will begin attending in about 130 hours (No, I'm not anxious...What makes you think that?! I've only been homeschooling for 23 years. It's not like it's going to be weird or anything for me to drop them off in some strange, sterile building to be taught by God-knows-who for the best part of their day. I'm fine with it, OK?!!!)

I like the idea of uniforms. I don't really care for the idea of having to sell body parts to pay for them. (And yes, my books are like appendages to me. I'm very "attached" to them....Sorry, I couldn't help myself :) My metanarrative is always humorous (to me.)

Anyway, I'm pooped. Between the Olympics and the book sales, I have had Very Little Sleep. But I'm a good mom and I didn't want my kids to be ignorant about what a bad dude Nietzsche is, so we got up at the crack of dawn (just 4 measly hours after I'd gone to bed) and went to the Worldview Seminar - where I just happened to learn the oh-so-cool word, metanarrative, in addition to so, so, so much more. I'm almost excited at the prospect of meeting a transcendentalist, or someone who's into hedonism, or existentialism, or postmodernism. Once I learn to pronounce them correctly I will be a force to be reckoned with.

I also bought some great books. Which I paid for with the money from my book sale. And no, honey, I see nothing wrong with this picture.

Here's one of my favorite quotes from today's workshops:

"The truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it." -Flannery O'Connor

In the next (few) day(s), I am going to tell you about a fun place I went this weekend in Savannah. Wow! I love that city - and not just because my daughter, son-in-law, and in utero grandchild live there. I bought something to prove I was really at this special place, because I want you to be very, very envious of me.

If my hair looks good enough I might even post a picture of me holding the thing I bought in the special place.

End of my metanarrative. Good night, friends.

Truth is so obscured nowadays and lies so well established that unless we love the truth we shall never recognize it.
{blaise pascal}

that is one of my favorite quotes... and you are one of my favorite metanarrativers...

In my Blogging for Dummies book it says that bloggers should comment on their comments. So, I just want to tell Lea that Blaise is definitely a better person to quote that Flannery, although I do have more respect for the darkness in her short stories now that I realize her worldview.
Isn't learning new things FUN?!

and look i checked back to see if anyone had commented on my comment and lookie there. it is almost like we are having a conversation over tea at my house next to my SHINY and CLEAN kitchen floor. where is my gold medal for floor cleaning?

well the comment section of this post is almost as entertaining as the post itself! ;)
I enjoyed reading the update...I wonder how much I could make selling my books...I only have a few...hundred! but then what would I do?! I bet the kids are excited about their new venture! What in the world will you do with your time?

i will be leaving tomorrow for orlando for a week and therefore will not be able to check to see if you are commenting on my comment, i would not want you to think i am rude or not in keeping with blogging for dummies.

O.k. so it must be a male thing, because it does not matter at all to me the original price of your books.... but i think that $700 is amazing. (my dh John would also want to know what the original price was)

I was AT the same worldview workshop...but I must have missed the definition of metanarrative. I asked Bex and she must have missed it, too!

I learn so much every time I go to one of these workshops...its hard to take it all in.

Does BFD really say to comment on comments in the Comment section? Re-read that so you can clarify it for me.

You're so entertaining, I have to comment whether you comment on my comment in the Comments section or not!

I'm just letting you know I've stolen both of your quotes for myself so I can look intelligent myself - on the shoulders of giants and all! ; )

I knew there was a reason I checked your blog!

First of all, to Meggy -
According to the 10 Commandments for blogging, you don't have to comment on EVERY comment, but the comment section should be the place where dialogue happens between the bloggee and the blog readers - and between the readers themselves.

Well, no wonder all those blogs have thousands of comments. If we all comment on each other's comments the numbers will explode upwards. However....I'm not into numbers (much) anymore. I've matured past that (at least for today.)

And for Cathy...No wait! I'll put the comment about her comment in another comment (not because my comment total will rise or anything immature like that....)

And now for Cathy (which btw will make my comments double digit....but I could not care less.)

Giants don't need to stand on the shoulders of giants. It makes our necks hurt to look at you when you do that :)

I,too like the quotes. So, are all of your children attending the classical school full-time? Will you no longer be a homeschooler?

I like the idea of the comment page as a place of dialogue. I'll have to see if that works on mine.

Thanks for taking us beyond the story.

See, Laura, you leave town for a few months and the whole world falls apart!

Yes, all the kids are going to the classical school, but they allow 8th graders and up to continue to register as HSers and take as few or as many as classes as they want. So, technically, I'm still a homeschooler.

And because of all the help my kids are going to need with homework, etc - - - I imagine my hours will be different....but I'll still be doing plenty of schooling.

I have a post milling around in my head that should be enough to convince everyone to KEEP homeschooling, too. Maybe it's because of the $275.00 I spent at Walmart last night on school supplies for five children (with two more than haven't received their lists yet) or maybe it's the summer book reports we're all trying to write at the last minute...Or maybe it's the uniforms that had to be returned (at my expense) and re-ordered (again...My expense.)

I'm sure my gratefulness will return Monday about 8:15. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to sleep the first week to make up for the stress of the last few weeks.

Kate (of former Calvary fame) comments in her comment section and I really like it- it's sort of rewarding in the same way that original comments are for the blogger. It let's me know she's reading my responses...so keep it up. Nice touch. :)

i just felt like i hadn't added to the comments in a while and didn't want to be forgotten....

Mrs. Pittman said...

Lea, sweetheart, I think even Blogging for Dummies would have to admit that the comment section is not supposed to take the place of ALL the other fine forms of dialogue. There's still the phone....and email....and letter writing.

Not that I mind hearing from you three times in one day...I'm just saying....

Wow, fun post and comment section:-) Not much else to say but felt it was my duty to let you know I've been here and enjoyed your post (not that you care who's reading or anything).

you forgot the BEST kind of conversation... the one face to face whilst eating blackberry grits.... see you monday morning at the boo hoo breakfast. just a hint, don't oversalt your grits if you plan to be crying into them...

KKK says that the expression you are looking for is "the numbers will grow exponentially"

"the numbers will explode upwards." may be misconstrued to infer some tangible explosion.

See what happens when an Engineer has nothing to say about your blog.

Besides that, while you were discovering meta narratives (my spell checker says it's two words, who is right? I'm counting on you Princess) I was getting a free calculator.

WHAT?!?!?!? you didn't have time for a new blog post today with ALL day without your kids?!?!?!? was it the mani/pedi that took up all your time, or the nap, or the fabulous blackberry grits?

I want to know how you survived your first day "not" homeschooling, too!

So why no post yet, day #3 of kids off to school? Tire ye yet of soaps and bon-bons?

Meg in Tally said...

You know, I agree with Boscout because you would think with all this time to yourself you would be cleaning and writing disgustingly interesting posts about all the things you are getting done so that the rest of us could feel so much more inadequate as we slog through our daily lives.

Woohoo! Championship run-on sentence!

I'm just here to read the comments. We know she's just storing up posts so she can do another marathon in October. If she does it right we'll never know that she wrote them in August!
